The
conscious mind is there to deal with the day to day decision
making, dealing with the unexpected and difficult situations
that develop and assessing new information as it comes in
and deciding whether it is important or not.
The subconscious is automatically
carrying out the behaviors you have taken on as habit and
freeing your conscious mind from having to think about every
thing you do. Imagine having to consciously think about everything
you did. You start to get out of bed in the morning, first
you have to think about how to coordinate your arms and legs
to put your slippers on, then how to get to the bathroom.
It would take you all day just to get out of the bathroom.
This subconscious ability to learn
to automatically carry out habitual behavior frees the conscious
mind and saves enormous amounts of your energy. But it can
also become a trap when that habitual
behavior is not in your best interest.
It can take effort and determination
to turn the habit around to a new positive behavior, giving
up smoking is a good example. Imagine that you have attended
a new advance safety driving course and at this course you
are taught to hold your steering wheel differently. But for
twenty years now you have held the wheel the same way, so
even that you know that the new position will mean you are
more in control of the vehicle, every time you hop in the
car you grab the steering wheel the same old way.
